Dating Age Gap

Age Difference Calculator for Dating

Enter two ages to see the dating gap and whether it falls within or outside the popular half-your-age-plus-seven social guideline.

The Half-Your-Age-Plus-Seven Rule Explained

This widely-known social guideline estimates the youngest partner age that is broadly considered socially acceptable for dating.

The half-your-age-plus-seven formula works like this: take the older person's age, divide by 2, add 7. The result is the minimum age of a dating partner that falls "within" the guideline. For example, a 40-year-old's minimum is 40 ÷ 2 + 7 = 27. If the younger person is 27 or older, the gap is "within" the guideline; if under 27, it's "outside."

This calculator does the arithmetic for you, clearly labeling the result as "within" or "outside." It is a social conversation tool, not a moral or legal standard — real-world relationship compatibility depends on far more than a formula.

Dating Gap Questions

Where did the half-your-age-plus-seven rule come from?

The rule first appeared in print in a 1901 French book and was originally about the ideal age for a bride. Over time it evolved into a general social guideline for dating age gaps. It has no scientific basis — it's a rule of thumb for casual assessment.

Should I make relationship decisions based on this formula?

No. The guideline is a social curiosity, not advice. Relationship success depends on communication, shared values, and emotional maturity — not arithmetic. Use this tool for fun or conversation, not as a decision-maker.

Why does this calculator ask for ages instead of birthdates?

The half-age-plus-seven formula works with current ages, not exact dates. That makes it faster — just enter two numbers. If you want the precise gap in years, months, and days, use the couples calculator with full birthdates.
